Today was the first day where I had my old life back – well the life I had between leaving my job and becoming a boat yardie.
Camilla headed off to work (only 4 days left to go!) and I joined our good friend Bartek and went off to see a sailmaker. Bartek and Kazia are buying a super new boat and being the smart people they are, they negotiated a set of new sails as part of the deal. Once we arrived we lugged the old sails out of the car and laid them out on the huge area in the sailmakers loft so they could be measured and new ones made. There’s much more to making sails that initially meets the eye, it’s a real fine art and a very precise science. Turns out it’s not just a triangular piece of cloth after-all! Wouldn’t it be fun to do an internship at a sailmakers to learn more about how it’s done?
After that I managed to hook up the chart plotter in the cockpit, which is awesome! We wanted it on deck to save having to go down below every time we wanted to see it. On deck the best place for it is on the pedestal attached to the metal grab rail (does that thing have have a special name?) attached with a very sturdy, purpose built clamp. We tried to see whether it’d fit next to the companion way but it’s just a little too big. Thanks to a great friend of ours we’ve got charts which cover the whole western Med too which is really handy. We haven’t integrated the wind instruments or the AIS yet, but I hope I’ll get that done tomorrow.
