Preveza (which means passage) is the proud owner of the only undersea tunnel in Greece. Opened in 2002 at a cost of 90m EURs its 1.5 mile length connects Epirus with Preveza and has greatly shortened the travel time across the mouth of the Ambracian Gulf, which previously was only possible by ferry. You can also walk through it although I’m not sure your lungs would be the same when you emerged from the other side. Interestingly too, because the area has some serious seismic activity going on it’s reinforced underneath by stone columns to help it withstand liquefaction during an earthquake.
Just after breakfast (which is becoming later and later!) we took the dinghy into town. We couldn’t quite see where others had parked theirs so Bob spent the day on a scraggy bit of “beach” behind where the fairground had setup camp.
After dropping off our laundry we sat for a coffee and watched the world go by. The old town is rather fancy end with its Italian fashion boutiques, up market cafes and quality handmade furniture shops. We found a place for lunch under a canopy of vine and sat watching the locals and wondering what they were talking so passionately about. This guy might have been taking his friend through his extensive tracksuit collection?
We went back to the boat, read a bit, popped back into town to collect our clothes then got an early night. Our afternoon coffee was a monumental mistake though as it wasn’t until 04:00 that we actually felt tired enough to sleep!
